Ho Chi Minh City has the most momentum of any pickleball scene I've played in Asia right now. Courts are opening monthly. The community is growing faster than anyone can track. And at VND100,000–200,000 per session — roughly USD$4–8 — you can afford to play every single day of your visit without once worrying about the cost. The scene is raw in places, but that rawness is exactly the energy.

District 2 and District 7 are the twin hubs. District 2 (Thao Dien) is where the expat community anchored the early scene — outdoor courts near riverside restaurants, English spoken widely, and a social culture that blends smoothly with the neighbourhood. District 7 (Phu My Hung) developed independently with a more local Vietnamese flavour and now has multiple indoor venues that rival anything in the region. Both are worth your time.

   Vietnam's scene runs on Reclub. Search 'HCMC' or 'Saigon' and you'll see active sessions, levels, prices, and available spots. Without it you're showing up blind. Two clubs to search first: Social Sport Club (explicitly welcoming to expats and visitors, plays every day, sessions fill fast) and 002 Pickleball Club in Thao Dien.

   Base yourself in District 2 (Thao Dien)

   Most courts, most expat-friendly sessions, and a neighbourhood that works well for longer stays. District 1 if you're already there. District 7 if you want bigger courts and don't mind the ride.

   Book evening sessions — skip the daytime heat

   The best sessions run 6pm–9pm when it's finally cool enough for outdoor play. Grab a moped on Grab and you're at any court in the city in twenty minutes.

HCMC's pickleball scene splits across three areas with different characters. District 2 (Thao Dien) is where most visitors should base themselves — the highest concentration of courts, the most expat-friendly sessions, and a neighbourhood that rewards longer stays with good food, cafes, and easy Grab connections to anywhere else. District 1 is the tourist centre: a few courts within reach, useful if you're already there for a night or two, but too hectic for a daily routine. District 7 (Phu My Hung) is the gritty third cluster — older area, bigger court spaces, and some of the best open play in the city if you don't mind the ride. The booking layer across all three is Reclub: a Vietnamese sports platform where clubs post upcoming sessions with price, level, and available spots. Download it before you arrive, search 'HCMC' or 'Saigon', and you'll see which sessions are active that day, what level they're running, and whether there are spaces left. Without Reclub you're showing up blind. With it, you can plan your week before you land.

The feel of the scene.

HCMC pickleball culture is electric. Sessions do not start exactly on time, and nobody minds — the warmup conversation is half the point. Expats and Vietnamese locals play together in a genuine mix that feels rare and valuable. After sessions, the group migrates to local banh mi stalls or pho restaurants where a full meal costs less than the session. There is a joyfulness to HCMC pickleball that older, more established scenes have traded for organisation. Come before the organisation arrives. One thing worth knowing before your first session: many Vietnamese players came from badminton, and it shows. Expect wrist-heavy smashes, deceptive drop shots from the kitchen line, and a baseline style that looks completely different from what you'd see in a Western rec session. If someone strings three unreturnable cross-court drops in a row, they probably played badminton competitively for ten years before picking up a pickleball paddle. It makes the sessions more interesting, not harder to join.
