Pickleball in Kuching.

Kuching mempunyai salah satu komuniti pickleball tertua di Malaysia — Pikabol adalah gelanggang terunggul di Sarawak dengan 16 gelanggang bertaraf kejohanan.

Sarawak brought pickleball to Malaysia before the peninsula caught up. Kuching's scene is anchored by Pikabol — a purpose-built 16-court facility that hosted an 811-player international tournament in 2025.

The author's take

"Kuching is worth it if you're doing Borneo. The combination of the city's food scene, the Sarawak cultural sites, and a pickleball community that's been at it longer than most makes for an unexpectedly rewarding stop."

Kuching has a quiet claim to pickleball history in Malaysia. Sarawak — the Borneo state Kuching anchors — organised the sport before it took off on the peninsula, and that head start shows in the community's confidence. The anchor venue is Pikabol, a purpose-built 16-court facility that hosted the MATTA Malaysia Pickleball Grand Slam in October 2025: 811 players, RM114,000 in prize money, an international field. For a city most visitors associate with orangutans and headhunter longhouses, that's a signal worth paying attention to.

The scene is smaller and more close-knit than KL or Penang, which works in a visitor's favour. Show up at Pikabol, ask at the front desk, and you'll find a session. The Sarawak Pickleball Association is active and has been running structured programmes since the early days — coaching, school outreach, and inter-club competition are all more developed here than you'd expect for a city this size.

Player culture & vibe

The feel of the scene.

Kuching pickleball culture reflects the city — unhurried, friendly, and more ethnically diverse than West Malaysia. The community mixes Sarawakian Malay, Chinese-Sarawakian, Iban, and expat players in a way that feels natural. The Sarawak Pickleball Association's early investment in structured play means sessions tend to be better organised than you'd expect at this scale. The Pikabol facility draws serious players for competition, but the daily drop-in scene is relaxed and welcoming.

Honest assessment

Pros & cons, no sugarcoating.

+ Pros
  • + Pikabol is one of the best single venues in Malaysia — 16 courts, tournament-grade, coaching available
  • + Sarawak Pickleball Association's early investment means a more structured, organised scene than the city's size suggests
  • + Smaller, close-knit community where visitors are genuinely noticed and welcomed
  • + Combines well with Borneo travel — Sarawak's culture, food, and wildlife are worth the trip on their own
− Cons
  • Smaller overall community than KL or Penang — fewer drop-in options outside Pikabol
  • Requires a flight from West Malaysia — not a short side trip from KL
  • Scene less well documented than peninsula cities — verify availability before arriving

Author's recommendation

"Kuching is the right stop for anyone combining Borneo travel with pickleball. The Pikabol facility is genuinely impressive, the community has been doing this longer than most, and the city itself delivers in ways most visitors don't expect."
