Bali's pickleball scene is concentrated in Canggu, and Canggu is one of the most naturally welcoming places to drop into a sport in Asia. The community runs on the same easy, open ethos as the surf and yoga worlds around it. Sessions happen daily, English is spoken by default, and newcomers integrate in roughly one session. The standard of play ranges from first-timers to solid 4.0s — there is no gatekeeping and no intimidation. Just show up.
Deus Ex Machina and The Lawn Canggu are the two main venues. Deus Ex Machina is iconic — a café, motorcycle workshop, and entertainment venue that added pickleball courts and somehow made it work. The Lawn has a more sports-club feel with better court infrastructure. Both run sessions that are announced on Facebook and WhatsApp the day before. The cost is IDR50,000–150,000 per session (USD$3–9) — among the best value in Asia.

Post a hello with your level and dates. Session announcements go out daily. Someone will tag you into the next game within hours.

Go to Deus Ex Machina for your first session
It is the social centre of the Canggu pickleball world. Arrive 10 minutes early, grab a coffee, and the crowd will absorb you naturally.

Pay in IDR cash
IDR50,000–150,000 at the door. GoPay and OVO are sometimes accepted. ATMs are common in Canggu — Mandiri and BCA have the lowest fees.

Stay for the post-game
The community migrates to the café or a nearby bar after almost every session. This is where you actually meet people. Do not skip it.

Canggu pickleball culture is about as relaxed as I've found anywhere. Nobody rushes. Sessions start when enough people have arrived. The post-game drink is at the same venue. There is a genuine internationalism here — any given session might have Australians, Dutch, Americans, Singaporeans, and Indonesians all playing together with English as the shared language. The Instagram photos look exactly like the reality, which is unusual. The community does what it looks like it does.
